What Is Cancer?

Cancer in man is a group of related diseases (over 100) that may develop in any part of the body.  According to the American Cancer Society, Cancer occurs when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Normal cells divide and grow in an orderly fashion, but cancer cells do not. They continue to grow and crowd out normal cells. Although there are many kinds of cancer, they all have in common this out-of-control growth of cells.  Different kinds of cancer can behave very differently. For example, lung cancer and breast cancer are very different diseases. They grow at different rates and respond to different treatments. That’s why people with cancer need treatment that is aimed at their kind of cancer.  Sometimes cancer cells break away from a tumor and spread to other parts of the body through the blood or lymph system. They can settle in new places and form new tumors. When this happens, it is called metastasis (meh-tas-tuh-sis). Cancer that has spread in this way is called metastatic cancer.

Even when cancer has spread to a new place in the body, it is still named after the part of the body where it started. For example, if prostate cancer spreads to the bones, it is still called prostate cancer. If breast cancer spreads to the lungs, it is still breast cancer. When cancer comes back in a person who appeared to be free of the disease after treatment, it is called a recurrence.  It can strike anyone of any age but comes more frequently as we get older.  One death in every four in the United States comes from cancer.  Statistics show that over 66 million Americans now living will eventually develop cancer.  It occurs in just about three out of every four families in the United States and kills more children between the ages of 3 and 14 than any other disease.

But according William L. Fischer in his book ‘How To Fight Cancer & Win’, diagnosis of cancer is not necessarily a death sentence.  Dr. Vincent T. DeVita Jr., former director of the National Cancer Institute, says,  “The American people are unduly pessimistic about what happens to them when they have cancer.  Truly half of the cancers in this country are curable.”  Statistics from the N.C.I. show steady progress against this most feared of all diseases.  In the 1930s, less than 20 percent of cancer victims survived for five years.  By the 1940’s, the five-year rate of survival had grown to 25 percent.  Today, over 50 percent of diagnosed cancer patients survive to reach the magic number of five years.  Children have fared even better.  At least 60 percent are expected to be among those surviving for five years.

What Does Cancer Do?

How does this killer operate?  In brief, cancer is the uncontrolled and disorderly multiplication of abnormal cells that form a malignant tumor (neoplasm) that is usually identified medically as a carcinoma or sarcoma, depending on what part of the body is involved.  The main difference between benign and malignant tumors is that benign tumors are usually enclosed within a capsule composed of a membrane of connective tissue.  Benign tumors don’t spread, and degenerative cell changes are much less frequent than in malignant tumors.  But a cancerous cell operates outside natural law.  Cancer destroys life by invading an essential organ where it grows out of control.  When it expands to the point where the organ can no longer carry on its essential function, death inevitably follows.  Dr. Lance Liotta, chief of the NCI’s Laboratory of Pathology explains,  “Cancer invasion and metastasis (spreading) is the main cause of treatment failure.  That is really what kills the patient in most cases.”  ‘How To Fight Cancer & Win’ -  William Fischer - pgs 2 – 3).

How Does Flax Relate to Cancer Help?

To best answer this question, we turn to 7 Nobel Prize Nominee, Dr. Johanna Budwig who is regarded in the scientific community as the “foremost authority on fats and healing”.  To understand how flax helps people with cancer, let us first look at Dr. Budwig’s ground-breaking discovery on fats and the human body.  Budwig’s book ‘Flax Oil As A True Aid Against Arthritis, Heart Infarction, Cancer and Other Diseases’ explains.   In 1949-1950, it was not possible to distinguish between fatty acids found in olive, linseed and sunflower oils.  Specialists in fats with us today will confirm this.

Chromotography Discovery

The development of chromatography in the field of fats made it possible to test various fatty substances on paper.  It was now possible to analyze a milligram of blood to the thousandth degree.  This process was first carried out by Dr. Johanna Budwig in 1949.  This meant that the fat in a drop of blood could now be broken down into its various components and precisely identified by its fatty acid makeup.  Before these ground breaking discoveries, publications had asserted that there was a very noticeable lack of conclusive detection methods for determining abnormalities in the metabolism of fats in the living human body.  At that time, scientists could only study abnormalities in the metabolism of fats in the final phase (meaning death).  As a result of Dr. Budwig’s ground breaking chromatography research, new productive research on the examination of fats from blood was inaugurated.  This new research was highly prosecuted in America, England, Belgium, Holland and all over the world.  But Budwig and other scientists found a surprisingly high number of correlations between fatal diseases and the metabolism of fats.

What is Fat - Actually?

Dr. Budwig explains that fat consists of glycerine.  Glycerine has three ‘arms’.  A chain of fatty acids is attached to each arm.  This chain of fatty acids has, with butter for example, 4 links to it; coconut butter and palm nut oil has 14 and 16 links.  These naturally occurring saturated fats cannot be turned into energy by the body without the presence of essential fatty acids, but, at the moment, it is those in a different group which play a larger role, particularly when there is a basic lack of the essential, highly unsaturated fats.   What is unsaturated fat?  Upon analyzing fatty substances, we come to the fatty acid chains with 18 links, and can observe that the links are, in places, not so firmly attached to each other.  The chain is fragile there, loose;  it absorbs water easily – as if you were to fray a smooth silk thread in one place and then draw it through water.  The frayed part absorbs water, or dye, more easily.  In the same way, these fatty acid chains with their weak, unsaturated connections, form protein associations very easily.  The fatty acids become water soluble through this association with protein.  There are unsaturated fatty acids in olive oil, for example, which has itself only one unsaturated connection.  This fat is not harmful, but neither is it the most beneficial which we need.  Dr. Budwig states, “What we really need are highly unsaturated fats”.  The moment two unsaturated double links occur together in a fatty acid chain, the effects are multiplied and in the highly unsaturated fats, the so-called ‘linoleic’ acids, there is generated a field of electrons, a veritable electrical charge which can be quickly conducted off into the body, thus causing a recharging of living substance – especially of the brain and nerves.  To stabilize these fats, the unsaturated connections ( which require oxygen so actively) are destroyed by industrial handling methods also known as industrial processing.  But it is exactly those highly unsaturated fatty acids which play a decisive role in the respiratory functioning of the body.  Without these fatty acids, the enzymes in the breath cannot function and we asphyxiate, even when given extra oxygen, as for example in hospitals.  The lack of these highly unsaturated fatty acids paralyses many vital functions.  Primarily, it cuts off the air we breath.  We cannot survive without air and food, nor can we survive without these fatty acids.

Fats Solidification Industry

In Dr. Johanna Budwig’s book ‘Flax Oil As A True Aid Against Arthritis, Heart Infarction, Cancer and Other Diseases’ - pg. 8, she addresses the mishandling of fats within the fats solidification industry.  Dr. Budwig states, “I regret to say that no one has known any better since 1902, than to start treating fats so as to make them more easily handled, commercially marketable, longer lasting and slower to turn rancid.  These unsaturated fats have been chemically treated so that their unsaturated qualities are destroyed, the field of electrons removed.  Their ability to associate with protein and achieve water solubility in the fluids of the living body is destroyed”.  Budwig explains that as a result, these fats are no longer active at the surface and capillary level.  This means they can no longer flow into the capillaries.  Medically speaking, one says “the blood needs thinning”.  The solid saturated fats which are not water soluble and cannot associate with protein are no longer capable of circulating through the fine capillary networks.  The blood thickens and circulation problems arise.

Flax Helps People With Cancer Because

According to William Fisher’s book ‘How To Fight Cancer & Win’,  it was Dr. Johanna Budwig who discovered that the right combination of essential fatty acids and sulfur-based proteins is the magic formula for conquering cancer and the other diseases of fatty degeneration.  Dr. Budwig began collecting and meticulously analyzing literally thousands of blood samples, both from healthy specimens and from the seriously ill.  The data that she tabulated showed that blood of the seriously ill (including cancer patients, diabetics, and those with precancerous conditions of the liver) was always, without exception, deficient in one of the important essential fatty acids (linoleic acid).  Other deficiencies became apparent as well.  Also missing were phosphatides (required for normal cell division) and albumin (a blood-producing lipoprotein).   Without the normalizing phosphatide, cancer cells (an abnormality) grow wild and proliferate.  Without albumin (a combination of linoleic acid and sulphur-based protein), blood analysis shows a strange chartreuse (greenish-yellow) substance in place of the healthy red oxygen-carrying hemoglobin that belongs there.  This fact explains why cancer patients are weakened and anemic.  Without linoleic acid, the body can’t produce hemoglobin.  Without hemoglobin, the blood is unable to carry vital oxygen to the suffocating cells and tissues.  Energy production suffers; the cancer victim becomes progressively more and more anemic, sinks into lethargy, and finally dies.  The blood of a healthy person always contains sufficient quality protein and the essential fatty acids.  Progressing from this point of fact, Dr. Budwig reasoned that the victims of the diseases of fatty degeneration could be restored to health by a diet high in essential fatty acids and sulfur-based proteins.   To test her theory, she determined to begin with the highest quality oil available in all nature, flax seed oil.  With its rich content of linoleic and linolenic acids (both the essential fatty acids), the liquid of flax seed oil fit that description perfectly.  For the sulfur-based proteins, Dr. Budwig selected skim milk.  Note (The latest formula uses low fat cottage cheese in place of skim milk.  She fed seriously ill cancer patients a combination of 100 grams of skim-milk proteins with 40 grams of fresh flax seed oil.  To make the mixture easier to swallow and blend, she added 25 grams of milk.  During the period of these early experiments, she drew blood and analyzed the samples consistently, looking closely for the most minute changes.

What she found was gratifying indeed.  Over a period of approximately three months, tumors gradually receded.  The strange greenish elements in the blood were replaced with healthy red blood cells as the phosphatides and lipoproteins almost miraculously reappeared.  The anemia disappeared and energy was restored.  Symptoms of cancer, liver dysfunction, and diabetes were completely alleviated.  Today, after 10 years of solid clinical application, Dr. Budwig’s cottage-cheese and linseed oil formula has been proven successful where many orthodox remedies have failed.      ‘How To Fight Cancer & Win’ by Fischer - pg 133-134.
